The Carolina Reaper is a cultivar of the Capsicum chinense plant. The pepper is red and gnarled, with a small pointed tail. In 2013, Guinness World Records declared it the hottest chili pepper in the world.
Scoville Heat Scale: 1,569,300 on average SHU (around 200 times hotter than jalapeño). In comparison, a Trinidad Scorpion Butch T can reach about 1.5 million. Bird’s eye chiles about 100,000, a Calabrian Peperoncino between 20,000 to 40,000, and a regular jalapeño about 8,000.
